Description
The Cairn Terrier is a small, hardy terrier with short legs. This breed is sturdy and tough with a fox-like expression.


Size
Male Cairn Terriers are 10-13 inches tall and females are 9-12 inches tall. The weight of an adult male Cairn Terrier is 14-18 lbs and females are 13-17 lbs.


Coat
This breed has a hard and weather-resistant coat. Cairn Terriers have a harsh outer coat and a short, soft, furry undercoat.


Color
Standard colors for the Cairn Terrier include; black, black brindle, brindle, cream, cream brindle, gray, gray brindle, red, red brindle, silver, wheaten, and red wheaten.


Temperament
The Cairn Terrier is a friendly and independent dog. They are also alert, loyal, happy, lovable and mischievous. They also like to chase and are very curious, fearless and bold.


Care
Brushing several times a week is necessary to keep their coat from becoming a mess. Bathe the dog about once a month and brush the coat while it is drying. Trim around the eyes and ears and clip the nails regularly. Do not over feed.


Exercise
Cairn Terriers should get enough exercise by running around a small yard or taking a daily walk.


Training
This breeds is fairly easy to train. Train them so barking will not get out of hand.


Shedding
Cairn Terriers shed little to no hair.


Allergies
Some Cairn Terriers are allergic to fleas.


Barking & Howling
Barking can become excessive if not properly trained. They tend to bark at new sights and sounds.


Life Expectancy
A well cared for Cairn Terrier can live 12-15 years.


Health
The health of a Cairn Terrier should be watched regarding overfeeding and allergies. Overfeeding can cause the Cairn Terrier to gain weight quickly. Some are allergic to fleas.
